RECYCLED PAPER ORNAMENTS
HOLIDAYS MADE MODERN

By:   Jill Stalowicz

If you’re anything like me, you have piles of old magazines and scraps of old wrapping paper lying around your place. Maybe you thought you’d reference that design article again or that the gift wrap would actually be large enough to wrap a regular-sized gift. How about being a little crafty and reusing this paper to create modern holiday ornaments? Here’s how…

Supplies:
- Various sheets of gift wrap, pages from magazines, old tissue paper – any color or pattern that you like
- Cardstock for mounting the paper
- Spray adhesive, glue stick or rubber cement
- Cutting mat – cardboard works great
- X-acto knife
- Ruler
- Stapler
- Thread or fishing line to hang the ornaments

1
To give your ornaments structure and shape, spray adhesive evenly on cardstock and gently mount your paper one sheet at a time. (Be sure to do this in a well-ventilated area.) It’s okay if your paper is larger than the 8.5”x11” cardstock sheet – just trim off the excess.

If you have a large enough scrap of wrapping paper, you can fold it in half and then spray both sides of the cardstock and slide it between the gift wrap. This way, both sides of the design will be visible on your ornament.

2
When all the paper is mounted, grab your cutting mat, ruler and blade and cut 1” x 11” strips.

3
Design your ornaments with 7 strips each. You can use a repeat pattern or mix it up.

4
Cut the center strip down to 6” long. Then, the three layers will have 2 strips each. Trim the innermost layer to 7", the middle layer to 9" and the outer layer to 11".

 5
Gather the strips and staple them together at the top, making sure that the tops are all flush. Then line up the bottom edges on the opposite side so they’re flush, and staple that end.

6
That’s it! Using the thread, hang them individually or in groups around your home.
